Zawadi was gangraped at the age of 14, she contracted HIV AIDs, a condition she has to live with for the rest of her life. She did not know the right action to take when the boys started harassing her, they started by staring, stalking, attempting and finally defiling her, but she did not know what to do or who tell. Our networking event will bring out stories of sexual harassment from Kenya, India and Malaysia, and about how an innovation 'Safecity' is being used to promote safe public spaces. Collaborations, partnerships and networks will be development during this event to better, sustain and scaleup this innovation. The event is in line with SDG 11 on Making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities.
Young girls are prone to sexual violence. UN Women states that 1 in 3 women around the world experience some form of sexual violence at least once in their lifetime. More than half of these occur to girls below the age of 16 and yet 80% of them choose not to talk about it for several reasons - fear of dealing with the police, fear of bringing shame to themselves and their families, fear of the lengthy judicial process for justice.
The innovation promotes efficient reporting systems of cases of violence including sexual violence. Skills are acquired and developed on digital data collection and documentation of cases of violence. Successfully methods that enables digital documentation, reporting and sharing of cases including locations where the abuse has taken place have been developed. Crowd map reporting platform and other relevant channels for reporting like missed dial facility, sms, integration, etc are explored and used. Training is used to upskill on data collection, data analysis, mobilising and organising communities and brainstorming solutions with stakeholders.
