CREO Antofagasta is a public, private and the civil society initiative led by the Regional Government, the Municipal Government of Antofagasta that has developed a city wide urban plan for Antofagasta, with a strong focus on public spaces, socio-spatial integration, environmental sustainability, community participation and public-private collaboration.
Antofagasta is a coastal city, located in the north of Chile, within the Atacama Desert, where Mining is the mayor economic activity (65% regional GDP). In term of incomes and job satisfaction Antofagasta has one of the highest performance within Chilean cities, however it has a low rate in public services, urban amenities and community participation.
This is the first plan of its kind in Chile as it has managed to bring together public sector, private companies and the community into one city vision, five strategies and a portfolio of over a 300 initiatives that should bring US$ 1.3Bn of concerted investment by 2035. This plan also includes a short-term portfolio to develop 38 initiatives and more than US $160M of investment by 2021, and some of it is already underway.
During the event there will be a presentation and an open discussion through the CREO Antofagasta's innovative experience with a focus in the implementation of cross-sector partnership in bringing long term vision and collective actions to produce lasting impact into the city; the challenges of cooperation among national, subnational level in implementing the Urban Agenda at the local level; and the role of urban agencies in facilitating and strengthening public sector efforts in the implementation of key strategic projects for more sustainable, fair and accessible city for all.
