NUP for consensus building: National Urban and Habitat Plan in Argentina
Presentation of the National Urban and Habitat Plan (NUHP) of Argentina developed within a cooperation agreement between the Government of Argentina and UN Habitat.
This panel will bring together representatives of the National Government of Argentina, urban stakeholders and academy, to share the process of development and consolidation of the first National Urban Policy after the UN Habitat III Conference, held in Quito, Ecuador, in October 2016.
The NUHP was first introduced last June 2017, in Mendoza at the First National Urban Forum, where over 350 participants, coming from the national and local governments, civil society, private sector and development agencies as well as the academia, were involved in the day-long event. During the forum, the challenges and opportunities regarding growth and urbanization at the local, regional and national level were discussed.
Argentina is addressing urban sustainable development by ensuring greater engagement with communities and multilevel partnerships. The Plan Nacional Urbano y del Hábitat is about building consensus among different stakeholders. The side event will focus on sharing experiences of how and why National Urban Policies are an important tool for sustainable urbanization, and national and local public policy approaches that perfectly align with SDG 1 and SDG11.
The NUHP reflects that National governments, with local governments and other stakeholders, must lead and coordinate the urbanization process to ensure our cities develop in a way that is sustainable, equitable and productive.
This side event is directly supportive of the WUF agenda and special theme. It promotes a debate about the tools for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda at the national level.
